Continuing on . . . I’m not going to give you 10 Lesson PLANS, but I will give you 10 ideas for incorporating Christmas into your language classroom. If you’ve missed the first two days, check them out also!
1. A Christmas Song – do gap fills, have students talk about what the song means, have them draw pictures about the song, etc.
2. Write a letter to Santa – kids everywhere do this! Have your students practice simple structures by writing a letter to Santa.
3. Christmas role play – Have kids take the letters that they wrote to Santa and role-play being elves at the North Pole or Santa himself. How do they respond when they receive the letters? What problems are going on at the North Pole before Christmas? How do the elves feel?
4. Christmas movies – Use Christmas films, or short cartoons. Show part of the film and then have students either act out or write how they think that the story will finish. If you have enough time, have the students film their own ending to the movie/show/cartoon as a project. Then, you can watch all of the endings together along with the real one!
5. Christmas brainstorming – Have students brainstorm words that have to do with Christmas. Have them brainstorm what it is like to be a mom or dad on Christmas rather than a kid. Have them brainstorm what stores do differently during the Christmas season.
6. Christmas ads – Have your students create Christmas ads for stores. Use this to incorporate different grammar structures, or have the students do a presentation/commercial for why people should buy their product.
7. Christmas research – Have students split up into groups, research Christmas in different countries, and then report on what they thought was interesting, different, exciting, etc.
8. Christmas questions – Let your students ask difficult questions about Christmas. Have them evaluate the things that they don’t understand. Let them work together to ask questions about Christmas that maybe aren’t always asked, and then work through them together to answer the questions. If no one can answer a question, have them work together to write to someone who they think might know the answer (they can find people on the internet.)
9. Christmas stories – Read abridged versions of Christmas stories, or sections of well-known Christmas tales. The students can create quizzes or do worksheets about the reading. You can also have them write a review of the story, or turn it into a short TV segment giving an overview and summary of the story.
10. Christmas party! Throw a Christmas party in class, but make it language practice as well. Have the students help with the planning (in English!) They will need to work together to make a list of everything that they need, what they want to do, etc. Make sure that there is good Christmas music, maybe some decorations, and play Christmas games. You can do a Christmas word search, or Christmas pictionary that will reinforce vocabulary while having fun. You can also play games like “Whisper-Down the Lane” or “Chinese Telephone” that give students a chance to practice pronunciation. Have a white elephant gift exchange, and have the students write a reflective journal entry on how they liked the party, what they thought about it, etc.
This is such a fun time of year! I hope you can all use it to your advantage in your classroom! Give your students a chance to forget that learning English is work, and remind them that it can be fun too!
